Chapter 2

It’s amazing how much more people are willing to be open and to express themselves when you give them the shield of anonymity. Max looked through the assignments from the previous week and she came to the conclusion that some of these kids really do have some sort of potential. It must be difficult at school, especially a school like this. Most do not come from your typical British, middle class family. Far from it. You can tell by the way they speak and by how they act. Some of them must care but don’t want to be engaged in class because they are worried about what their peers might think. She remembered school herself, it is very much about peer pressure. Max recalled the countless times she was pressured by her peers, usually in party settings where she was dared to kiss boys and down pints of cider. She shuddered and realized she was staring into space and looking straight at a kid who was meant to be in detention. Awkward. She smiled at him and went back to reading the poetry.

It was fairly safe to say that after a week she felt much more confident as a teacher. There were still technical things that she needed to learn, but more or less she found a way to connect with all of the classes and some of the students. She tried hard to remember all names so that she wasn’t one of those annoying teachers who used terms like “Oh you with curly hair”, which always seemed a bit disrespectful. Some came easier than others, but she knew she’d get there by the end of this week.

Max enjoyed some of the stuff that she has read so far. These were mostly poems about crushes and heartbreak. Some were about mental health issues, like depression and anxiety - it’s amazing how much more open people were about this sort of thing these days. She picked up another piece of paper and she couldn’t help but notice the name in the top right corner. She felt like she just read the last page of a book. There was a feeling of relief, but also subtle disappointed. Max went to read the actual piece.

I’m sorry

for every untrue word,

for every dishonest touch

and every line that hit my brain.

I’m sorry

you got caught

in the force of nature

I call my lack of conscience

just like I’m sorry

that I couldn”t keep the unspoken

promise which was born in the

millisecond between

you screaming my name

and your orgasm.

The truth is,

you were never special

and I’m not even sorry.

“Frances, mate.” Max reread this over and over again. Ouch. Imagine being whoever this is directed at. Brutal. She felt somehow awkward knowing who wrote this, a bit like a third wheel.

She put the poem away and looked at her watch. She still had some time before her next lesson, so she popped out to the staff room to see if Alan was there, but it was empty. Max could hear raised voices in the girl’s bathroom.
